LONG BEACH—Supporters of the Armenian National Committee of America recently conferred with a key member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Congressman Alan Lowenthal (D-CA), at an event hosted by Dr. Sarkis and Tamara Arevian at their Long Beach, California home. The event on November 23, 2015, which drew a broad cross section of community members from California’s 47th Congressional District, was held in appreciation of Congressman Lowenthal’s strong record of support on Capitol Hill for human rights issues, including his backing of Armenia and Artsakh. Most recently, Congressman Lowenthal joined a bi-partisan grouping of federal legislators in co-authoring the Royce-Engel letter, which calls for renewed U.S. leadership in keeping the peace along the Artsakh line of contact.
The Royce-Engel initiative supported by Congressman Lowenthal and strongly backed by the ANCA, has three key elements. First, it calls for an agreement from all sides not to deploy snipers along the line of contact. Second, it seeks the placement of OSCE-monitored, advanced gunfire-locator systems and sound-ranging equipment to determine the source of attacks along the line of contact. Lastly, the Royce-Engel initiative calls for the deployment of additional OSCE observers along the line of contact to better monitor cease-fire violations. Following a nationwide campaign by the ANCA and thousands of its supporters, over 80 members of the U.S. House of Representatives co-authored the Royce-Engel letter.
“We are pleased that so many ANCA supporters were in attendance for this event held for Congressman Lowenthal and generously hosted by Dr. Sarkis and Tamara Arevian,” shared ANCA-Western Region Chair Nora Hovsepian. “Congressman Lowenthal serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which is a critical committee for so many issues of concern to his constituents, including those from the growing Armenian American community in his Congressional District. We look forward to working with Congressman Lowenthal during the balance of the 114th Congress on a variety of issues, including two main ANCA goals – strengthening the U.S.-Armenia relationship and safeguarding the right of self-determination for the people of Artsakh,” Hovsepian added.
On behalf of the ANCA-Western Region, Board member Steve Artinian presented the hosts of the event Dr. Sarkis and Tamara Arevian with a special gift from the White House in appreciation for their firm and unbending dedication to the Armenian American community. The Arevian family have been longstanding supporters of the ANCA and the organizations work to unite the Armenian American community in support of the Armenian Cause.
Congressman Alan Lowenthal was born and raised in New York City. After earning his Bachelor’s Degree from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and his Ph.D. from Ohio State University, he moved to Long Beach, California in 1969 where he taught Community Psychology at California State University, Long Beach until 1998. Congressman Lowenthal successfully ran for Long Beach City Council in 1992, where he served for six years. He then continued his leadership in Sacramento, first serving three terms as a State Assembly member, then two terms as a State Senator. The Congressman currently represents California’s newly-created 47th Congressional District, which includes portions of Long Beach, Signal Hill, Lakewood, Cypress, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Garden Grove, Westminster, Stanton, and Buena Park.

Քոնկրեսական Լօուընթալի Ի Պատիւ Ընդունելութիւն
ԼՈՆԿ ՊԻՉ.- Հիւրընկալութեամբ տոքթ. եւ տիկին Սարգիս եւ Թամարա Արեւեաններուն, Երկուշաբթի, Նոյեմբեր 23ին տեղի ունեցաւ Ներկայացուցիչներու տան Արտաքին յարաբերութեանց յանձնախումբի կարեւոր անդամներէն մէկը հանդիսացող Էլէն Լօուընթալի ի պատիւ ընդունելութիւն մը, որուն ներկայ էին Ամերիկայի Հայ Դատի յանձնախումբի անդամներ եւ համակիրներ։
Հաւաքին նպատակն էր շնորհակալութիւն յայտնել Քալիֆորնիոյ 47րդ ընտրատարածքը ներկայացնող դեմոկրատ քոնկրեսականին հայանպաստ քաղաքականութեան համար, որուն վերջին ապացոյցն էր անոր ստորագրութիւնը քոնկրեսականներ Ռոյսի եւ Էնկըլի հեղինակած այն նամակին վրայ, որ Արցախի մէջ խաղաղութիւն հաստատելու համար յաւելեալ ջանք թափելու կոչ կը կատարէր Միացեալ Նահանգներու գործադիր իշխանութիւններուն։
Աւելի քան 80 քոնկրեսականներու ստորագրած նամակը յոյժ մտահոգիչ կը համարէ յարձակումներուն աճը. հոն կը շեշտուի, թէ Արցախի տագնապին խաղաղ լուծում մը գտնելու համար, կենսական է հետեւեալ 3 քայլերուն որդեգրումը.
